A sump and pump system is an integral part of a Type C water management system. The sump is built into the floor slab and will collect water that seeps through into the drainage channels around the perimeter of the basement. It essentially is a large plastic container used to collect any water in the system. Pumps are housed within the sump which are used to discharge the water away from the premises. They are designed to deal with large amounts of water, and can even deal with flooding.

Sump pumps will usually contain more than one pump in order to provide extra levels of protection, while high water alarms and battery back ups are used to ensure continuous protection even if properties are faced with power cuts. Modern alarms have the ability to be monitored remotely for added peace of mind.

Type C waterproofing manages water ingress by using air voids created by the studs in membranes applied to walls and floors. This depressurises the water causing it to flow into cavity drainage channels around the perimeter of the basement. These will lead to strategically placed sump pumps which can then activate and remove the water collected in the sump.

The first step is to excavate a sump pit in a suitable position. This can be built during the installation of a new floor slab, or more commonly cut out of the existing floor slab. Drainage channels will need to be installed to direct water into the newly installed sump pump. Inside the sump there are usually two pumps with floats set at differing levels, with one acting as a back up. There will be a further float used to activate the high water level alarm.
